やんわりと意見を伝える（Giving an opinion gently）

自分の意見をやんわりと伝えたい時に使える英語表現です。

英語だから何でもズバッと言うわけではなく、「やんわり」表現する方法があります。

遠回しに言ったほうがコミュニケーションを円滑に進められる事があるのは英語も日本語でも同じですよね。

Kind of〜 / Sort of〜

”返信が遅い”などのネガティブな形容詞表現を柔らかくします。

例文

He always replies emails kind of slow, I hope his manager takes care of him.
彼、いつもちょっとメールの返信が遅いんだけど、彼のマネージャが注意してくれないかな。

Not such〜 / Not so〜

"そこまで必要（need）ないかもね"など、名刺表現を和らげるのに使用します。
there's not such a〜やthere are not so many〜など否定形の表現で使います。

例文

A. Everyone loses out on the training because of him?

A. みんな彼のせいでトレーニング受け損なったんだよね?

B. Well, there's not such a great need for the training at the moment.

B. うーん、そうかもしれないけど、今どうしても必要なトレーニングじゃないかもね。

Not exactly〜 / Not quite〜

相手を理解している事を伝える時に使える表現です、動詞表現を和らげるのに使用します。
It's not exactly what you〜やIt's not quite what you〜など否定形の表現で使います。

例文

A. I never agreed to postpone this task until next week.

A. 私はこのタスクを翌週に延期していいなんて、全く同意した覚えはない。

B. I can see that this isn't quite what you expected.

B. わかります。思ってたのとは違いますよね。

-ishを使う

形容詞に-ishをつける事で、表現を和らげる事ができます。

例文

A. The meeting was so long and tiring.

A. ミーティング超長いし退屈すぎ。

B. Well, it was a longish meeting, but it's necessary for us.

B. 確かにちょっと長かったね。でも必要なミーティングだよ。

進行形を使う

進行形を使う事で、発言を柔らかく伝えられる場合があります。やんわりと依頼したい時によく使います。

例文

A. I was thinking that if you could talk to the guys and see if we can persuade them.

A. ちょと彼らと話して説得できるかどうか考えてみてもらえませんか？
